Bugge Wesseltoft - Moving (2001)

I just rediscovered an album i had forgotten about for a long time. I have to thank Merete for introducing me to this fabulous artist.
Bugge Wesseltoft [Allmusic link] is an Norwegian Nu-Jazz composer and artist, widely considered as one of the best in his genre here in Norway, he has also won acclaim for his albums in Europe. The album Moving features landscapes of music, relaxing and calm with generally straight forward piano/synth parts. In some perspectives the music can be tracked or linked to the works of Pat Metheny (in my opinion), as they generally have the same ideas when it comes to working with long stretches of seamlessly simple arrangements and little change in the melody. although familiar in the ways it is composed, the music on Moving seems a bit more European in trend and sound. Alot of the sounds and arrangements come from the Cafe Del Mar scene in the late 90's and early 00's and could easily be called coffee shop music.

Tracklist:
Change
Gare Du Nord
Yellow is the Colour
Lone
Moving
Heim

My personal favorites are "Yellow is The Colour" and "Lone", but almost all of the melodies and songs have the same qualities and muscicianship. Bugge has gotten help from members of his record company including Håkon Kornstad and "Sidsel Endresen" (which he also has recorded an full album with: Out Here, In There).
If you like music which has a little pump but still manages to be soothing and calming this is the album for you. Also if you are a coffeshop owner you should consider it.

Porcupine Tree - Signify (1997)

Although not especially old, its still a classic in my book. the album Signify from one of the best band's ever to come out of the British isles is widely considered as one of the best albums ever released in what i like to call "the sub-Pink Floyd genre". In a interview given in 2007 They said this about the album:
"It was an result of a gathering of thougts in the band, we wanted to make something that would outlast us. We wanted a testimony"
And what a testimony it is. Porcupine Tree [allmusic link] is playing with many genres in this amazing album, from jazz, to psychedelic rock to prog. It's all here to enjoy.
Tracklist:
Bornlivedie
Signify
Sleep of no Dreaming
Pagan
Waiting phase One
Waiting phase Two
Sever
Idiot Prayer
Every Home is Wired
Intermediate Jesus
Light Mass Prayer
Dark Matter

Personal favorites on this album is the tracks; "Every Home is Wired", "Sleep of no Dreaming" and "Dark Matter". A great album for anyone who likes Pink Floyd, early Genesis or Prog in general. Porcupine Tree just released a new album which were given good critics, check that one out as well!

Foy Vance - Hope (2007)

Traveling to Dublin last autumn i picked up on an English/Irish artist called Foy Vance [allmusic link] . Since the early 00's we've been tuning in to almost only singer/songwriters especially here in Norway, and I've started to grow tired of the constant stream of both mediocre melodies and artists. But Foy Vance really hit me. His stunning vocal performances and lyrics complimented by easy and straightforward arrangements really made the difference for me.
So when we landed in Dublin i bought three copies of his debut cd "Hope". One for me, one for my girlfriend and one for the friend who introduced me to him (I had to buy them in Dublin since you couldn't get any copies here in Norway)
Tracklist
Be With Me
Shed a Little Light
Doesn't Take a Whole Day
Fifteen
I Was Made
Treading Water
Gabriel and the Vagabond
First of July
Elshaneed
Indiscriminate Act of Kindness
Hope, Peace and Love
If you could only see yourself like i See you
Dry Wells
Pull me through
Two Shades of Hope

My personal favorites on this album must be the heart wrenching "Two Shades of Hope", "Gabriel and the Vagabond" and "Indiscriminate Act of Kindness", whereas the later one has a vocal performance which is stunningly good.
If you are tired of the Dime-a-dozen singer songwriter, Foy Vance is a good choice. He takes it back to people like Nina Simone and Jeff Buckley, both musically and spiritually.

Van Morrison & The Chieftans - Irish Heartbeat (1988)

Traveling to Ireland for one week, i remembered one of my favorite albums concerning the irish folk music. In one of his most acclaimed albums Van Morrison decided to take on the music which had inflicted so much influences and inspiration upon him.
Van Morrison [Allmusic link] had started out as a Celtic folk singer and with this album he moved back to his roots. After a long rock and jazz period this album was exactly what he needed to renew his image and get some new juice into the systems.
Listen to the almost incredible sincere vocals of Van and the eclectic muscicianship of the Chieftans [Allmusic link]. All these versions are almost right down to the tradition with instruments like: Bozooki, mandolin, fiddle and the bodhran.
Tracklist:
Star of the County down
Irish Heartbeat
Tá Mo Chleamhnas Déanta (My Match It Is Made)
Raglan Road
She moved Trough The Fair
I'll tell me Ma
Carrickfergus
Celtic Ray
My Lagan Love
Marie's Wedding

My favorite songs are Marie's Wedding, Tá Mo Chleamhnas Déanta and Star of the County down. Absolute superb versions of these songs. The album recorded in 1988 is a classic in Irish folk music and if you like this kind of music, check it out!

XTC- [1989] - Oranges & Lemons [319k VBR]

XTC- [1989] - Oranges & Lemons [319k VBR]

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Oranges & Lemons is an album by the British band XTC. The name of the album may have been taken from the lyrics to Skylarking's "Ballet for a Rainy
Day."

The band was sent to Los Angeles to record the album, and Paul Fox was retained to produce it. As it was his first producing job, Fox tried to be easy to work with. The album was lushly produced with multiple overdubs on almost every track, yielding the psychedelic feel. The album didn't meet with significant approval by XTC, but the band was under pressure to create a hit single and the label liked it, so they didn't argue much. As part of the promotional materials for the album, XTC produced a quasi-puppet show called The Road To Oranges And Lemons making fun of the entire history of the album, from a meeting with Virgin Records head Richard Branson through the initial meeting with a glad-handing Paul Fox, and the actual recording.

Album information

The album produced a minor hit, "The Mayor of Simpleton," the only XTC song ever to top the US charts. The album was a commercial success, reaching the charts in both the US and Britain. "The Mayor of Simpleton" video also saw significant airplay on MTV, especially on the alternative music show "120 Minutes."

The album produced three hit singles: "The Mayor of Simpleton" – reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, No. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 46 on the UK singles chart. "King for a Day" which reached No. 10 on the US alternative / modern rock charts and "The Loving" which was released in August 1989 in the UK. The album reached No. 1 on the US college / alternative album chart, No. 44 on the US Billboard Top 100 chart and No. 28 on the UK album chart.

To promote the album and appease the stage-shy Andy Partridge the band went on a two-week acoustic radio-station tour of the US, on which they performed a few songs from the album and a few medleys of earlier hits. The tour commenced on May 15, 1989 in Boston and ended May 31, 1989 at Eastern Sound Studios in Toronto before a live studio audience of two hundred people.

Also of note: "King For a Day," which the band performed on Late Night With David Letterman on June 30, 1989; "Pink Thing," which was a classic XTC double entendre; "Chalkhills and Children," which lead singer Andy Partridge considers one of his favorite compositions.

The album cover is directly inspired by a 1965 WOR-FM 98.7 radio advert
poster by Milton Glaser.

The British edition of the Oranges and Lemons album was available as a limited edition
3 MiniCD box set (CDVT2581).

Cud
From Wikipedia,

Background information:

Origin Leeds, England
Genre: Indie rock
Years active
1987 to 1995, 2006-

Label(s) Reception (1987 to1988), Imaginary (1988 to 1991), A&M (1991 to 1995).

Cud are a British indie band formed in Leeds, England in 1987, consisting of vocalist Carl Puttnam (b. Ilford, Essex), guitarist/keyboardist Mike Dunphy (b.Northumberland), bassist William Potter (b. Derby, England), and drummer Steve Goodwin (b. Croydon, Surrey).

Though an indie rock band, their music incorporated elements of funk. They were critically acclaimed throughout their career, but never broke through to a mainstream UK record-buying audience. Perhaps this was in part due to their eccentric lyrical concerns, which occasionally led to their dismissal as somewhat of a "joke" band.

Bob Dylan - The Rolling Thunder Revue (1975)

Bob Dylan [Allmusic link] is arguably the greatest writer and singer of the 20th and 21th century. These Live recordings done i 1975 shows the genius hiding inside the little man from Minnesota.

Bob Dylan started out as a folk musician, but he tired of this when the established artists and politicians tried to make him a pawn in their game, so by 1966 he changed it all around again. He started doing el concerts with a backing band (The Band [Allmusic link]) and wrote rock songs. In England he got threats and almost riots under his concerts. People were shocked, they came to see the polite and interesting Bob Dylan, not the rebellious. Issued in 2002 this double cd issue features bootleg and recordings never before released from The Rolling Thunder tour. The only thing i have to point out that it is not a complete set, Only highlights. Aside from that there is nothing that should stop you listening to some great concert tapes from one of the worlds greatest and most challenging live artists of all time.

The double set features 22 songs, whereas many of them are prime versions of the respectable songs. For instance "Hurricane" "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" "It's all over Now baby Blue" and "Romance in Durango". A Recommendation to all fans of Bob Dylan and music alike.

Skids - [1978] - Scared To Dance [319k VBR]

Skids - [1978] - Scared To Dance [319k VBR]

Description

Having criminally fallen off the critical radar, the Skids haven't received the reappraisal they deserve in the wake of the successes of current media darlings like Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys.

Featuring the Celtic charm, acerbic wit and talismanic vocals of Richard Jobson alongside Stuart Adamson's often-copied frenetic riffing, it remains an electrifying debut from one of punk's more learned acts.

It's difficult to get off to a better start than the seminal 'Into the Valley', a song which Graham Coxon's solo career is largely in debt to, but the quality rarely falls below its level. 'Charles', Adamson's fantastical tale of a factory worker who becomes part of the machinery he is employed to operate, 'The Saints are Coming', 'Of One Skin' and 'Melancholy Soldiers' provide
the highlights, and are all equal to anything on the Clash’s debut.

Captain Oi has fleshed out the album with various EP tracks and b-sides, the most notable being the live favourite 'TV Stars', which sees Jobson namecheck a host of celebrities before the audience joins in with him shouting ‘Albert Tatlock!’Inside the 16-page booklet is a (much needed!) lyric sheet, sleeve art from releases relevant to the album, and a brief essay.

The sound quality is improved from previous issues, although the album is showing its age and the remastering isn't as solid as I’m sure it could be in the right hands, but it is the best currently available and is unlikely to be bettered anytime soon. Some of the bonus tracks also appear to be sourced from vinyl rather than the master tapes, but this remains the best version available of a classic, forgotten gem.

Bruce Hornsby & Bela Fleck - Concert takes from 1996 (1996)

Ok i know, i know... Bruce Hornsby [Allmusic link], not known for the best music in the world, and not that special in any way. But hey i really like this album.
I was recorded in 1996 during a session/concert with Bela Fleck [Allmusic link] and has no name and has never been released as a cd. I found it online and i just started listening to it. The first song i played was Mandolin Rain/Brokedown Palace. Those two songs combined made for beautiful arrangements. He also has some of the more known hits like "The way It is" (Mostly known trough 2pac's version) and "End of the Innocence"

What really hits me is what three instruments on a scene can do. These recordings sound allot like Bobby Mcferrin and Chick Coreas recordings and they are very easy to listen to. Piano, Banjo and Vocal. I Guess this album is for anyone who likes 80's hits in new and more sophisticated arrangements.

The Dukes Of Stratosphear - [1987] - Chips From The Chocolate Fireball

The Dukes Of Stratosphear - [1987] - Chips From The Chocolate Fireball

Maybe one of my top favourite 5 albums of all time. Made a full quality 320 rip, with full size art work.
Enjoy, if you don't like it, shame on you, he he

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
XTC created the Dukes of Stratosphear almost on a lark, as an excuse to play the kind of music they grew up listening to and playing.

The invention of the pseudonym gave them the opportunity to wear on their sleeves the influences they had only hinted at as XTC.

The Dukes released two records between 1985 and 1987 and they are both compiled in their entirety on Chips from the Chocolate Fireball.

Listening to Chips is like sifting through a '60s psychedelia bin at a good used record store. The only thing missing are the pops and crackles as you drop the needle onto the neglected vinyl.

The best of the era is recreated here with reverence and an amazing attention to detail:

Syd Barrett's childlike lyrics, the Blue Cheer fuzz-guitar frenzy, dissonant Sgt. Pepper strings and horns, and good old Brian Wilson-style indulgences. The record opens with "25 O'Clock," which instantly recalls the Electric Prunes' "I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night." From there the references become more obscure: the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" is invoked by the bombastic guitar sludge of Sir John Johns (Andy Partridge) and Lord Cornelius Plum (Dave Gregory) on "My Love Explodes," while "Bike Ride to the Moon" is demented enough to have appeared on Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Other high points include the Hollies-inspired "Vanishing Girl" and the Beatles-style piano stomp "You're a Good Man Albert Brown." The record closes with the priceless "Pale and Precious." With its dead-on Wilson brothers harmonies and faux theremin, the song plays like an undiscovered gem from the Beach Boys' Smile sessions. --Paul Ducey

Eat - [1989] - Sell Me A God [251k VBR]

Eat - [1989] - Sell Me A God [251k VBR]

Sell Me a God (1989)is a lost treasure in the whole Indie-Rock thing of the late 80s.

All things said. This is one of my 5 favourite albums of all time, trying to squeeze that sentence from my lips.

The lyrics are urban, but timeless.
Like one of my favourite sentences from the Tom Wait'ish' track "Red Moon":
"Is life worth living?, well it depends on the liver."

I don't have that many albums that don't have love as a main infulence of pain, this is more like Munchs' "Scream", the way you feel utterly lost, and watching people around you, everything like a theatrical scene.

Ange Dolittle's strong controlled vocals lead the way on this debut album from 1989. It rocked it's way through World Domination, petrol, Mr. and Mrs. Smack, bums, drink, and boredom. Theirs is an urban world full of chaos and falling apart. Paul and Max Noble provide excellent lead on guitar and are always in control no matter the pace. Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself (2005)

A mate of mine (not really into music) said; dude, you have to get Imogen Heap [allmusic link] for me. I cant find it anywhere and she's so god damn good. And i found her, i listened to the tunes and yeah, he was right.
Imogen Heap hails from Essex in England, but now lives and works in London. She started out as a singer/songwriter, but not the usual kind. She played alot of alternative music with alot of electronica and classical influences mixed up. The first thing i noticed was the originality, then the sound and voice picture which reminded me of Kate Bush. Her first album was praised, but i really like the second album better.
Speak for Yourself is one of those albums you either like or hate. It has its own sound, and although it copies some from other influences its still Imogen Heap's sound. Excellent vocal performances and electronica sounds mixed with a little of the classical influence that comes from learning the piano in that way sounds heavenly in my ears.

Tracklist:
Headlock
Goodnight and Go
Have you got it In You?
Loose ends
Hide and Seek
Clear the Area
Daylight Robbery
The Walk
Just for Now
I am in love With you
Closing in
The moment i Said it

Although her voice has a really powerful touch to it, the lyrics are frail and tells us about alot of things that seems personal. For instance:
"Just put back the car keys,
Or somebody's gonna get hurt
Who are you calling at this hour?
Sit down, come round, I need you now
We'll work it all out together,
But we're getting nowhere tonight
Now sleep, I promise it'll all seem better,
Somehow in time"

Ive always liked artists that makes lyrics with a personal touch and this is one of them. Check her out:)

Wilco - Kicking Television: Live In Chicago (2005)

It all started about a year ago, i was driving over to my ex's home and stopped by a gas station. As i almost always do i checked the cd's they were selling there and to my great surprise i found Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot for only 10$ worth of money. I bought it along with a hotdog and a coke. After coming home again i checked the cd out and it wasn't bad at all. although I've never heard Wilco [allmusic link], i always reckoned they were good since the papers always praise them (at least here in Norway they do).
One year later i popped into the nearest branch of Platekompaniet (a cd store) and saw that they had a large sale, and thats where i found this one. I almost never buy live cd's when i don't have history with the artist, but the store clerk advised me to buy it, and a couple of hours later i understood why.

The first song i played after inserting the disk into my computer was "Jesus, Etc." i was immediately struck by how they somehow had incorporated country into their pop-rock. I guess its just the steel guitar. Anyways this and a few others grew on me for a few days, and now i have a new favorite live album.
Tracklist cd1:
Misunderstood
Company in my Back
The Late greats
Hell is Chrome
Handshake Drugs
I am Trying to break your heart
Shot in the Arm
At least that's What you said
Wishful Thinking
Jesus, Etc.
I'm the Man who loves you
Kicking television

Tracklist cd2:
Via Chicago
Hummingbird
Muzzle of Bees
One by One
Airline to Heaven
Radio Cure
Ashes of American Flags
Heavy Metal Drummer
Poor Places
Spiders (kidsmoke)
Comment (if all men are truly Brothers)

As i already have told you, "Jesus, Etc." was one of my favorites and here are some other tunes from the album: "Wishful Thinking", "I am Trying to break your Heart", "At least that's what you said". They are all beautiful and i love some of the lyrics. I don't know what really hit me with Wilco, but something did, maybe its the steel guitar, the frail vocals and the random rantings on the guitar. Anyways its a new love and i am deeply satisfied with it.

Hide and Seek

Just found this amazing English artist called Imogen Heap with wonderful music and lyrics:

"Hide and Seek"

where are we?
what the hell is going on?
the dust has only just begun to form
crop circles in the carpet
sinking feeling

spin me round again
and rub my eyes,
this can't be happening
when busy streets a mess with people
would stop to hold their heads - heavy

hide and seek
trains and sewing machines
all those years
they were here first

oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before the takeover,
the sweeping insensitivity of this still life

hide and seek
trains and sewing machines (oh, you won't catch me around here)
blood and tears (hearts)
they were here first

Mmmm whacha say,
Mmmm that you only meant well?
well of course you did
Mmmm whacha say,
Mmmm that its all for the best?
of course it is
Mmmm whacha say?
Mmmm that it's just what we need
you decided this
Mmmm whacha say?
Mmmm what did she say?

ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs
speak no feeling no i don't believe you
you don't care a bit,
you don't care a bit

(hide and seek)
ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs

(hide and seek)
speak no feeling no i don't believe you
you don't care a bit,
you don't care a (you don't care a) bit

(hide and seek)
oh no, you don't care a bit
oh no, you don't care a bit

(hide and seek)
oh no, you don't care a bit
you don't care a bit
you don't care a bit

Cat empire - Cat Empire. Two shoes (2003, 2005)

The aussie band Cat Empire [Allmusic link] combines many styles in its catchy punk-rock-ska-jazz music. I've always liked band that has that little extra on an album and these boys sure got it right from the start. Ive never believed one could combine so many styles of music, But they've done it masterfully.

Two albums, but one sound, and the sound has so many sounds within it, i love it. Sometimes i wish i could just break out my guitar and play with these guys, they seem to be a reasonably good live band. The first album which also earned them an well earned place in the Australian scene was Cat Empire, its drizzled with good tunes such as "the Chariot" and "Hello". But the real rythm and tunes you find on the "Two Shoes" album from 2005. "The Rythm", "The wine song" and "Two shoes" were all tunes i fell instantly for. If you like alternative rock/jazz/ska/indie check them out!

Harmonium - Si on avait besoin dune cinqueeme siason (1975)

Tittelen betyr: If one neaded a fifth season.

The Doors - The Doors (1967)

60 tallet, sex drugs & rock and roll.

The Doors [Allmusic Link] er kanskje favorittbandet mitt fra denne epoken sett bort ifra The Beatles.
Mest kjent fra filmen "Apocalypse now".
Innhold:
Break on Trough (to the Other side)
Soul Kitchen
The Crystal Ship
Twentieth Century Fox
Alabama Song (Wiskey Bar)
Light My Fire
Back Door Man
I Looked at you
End of the Night
Take it as it Comes
The End

Mine favoritter er "The Crystal Ship", "Alabama Song (wiskey Bar)" og "The End".

Jorn - Out to Every nation (2004)

Innhold:
Young Forever
Out to Every Nation
Something Real
Living With Wolves
Vision eyes
One day we will Put out The Sun
Behind The Clown
Rock Spirit
Trough Day and Night
When Angel wings were White
Living with Wolves

"Vision Eyes", "Behind the Clown", "When Angel wings were White" og "Out to Every Nation" er mine favoritter.

Michael Brecker - The Nearness of You: The Ballad Book (2003)

Michael Brecker [Allmusic Link], Pat Metheny, Jack Dejohnette, Charlie Haden, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock.

De to låtene jeg henger meg opp i er "The Nearness of You" og "Don't let me be Lonely Tonight".

Innhold:
Chan's song (Never Said)
Don't Let me Be Lonely Tonight
Nascente
Midnight Mood
The Nearness of You
Incandescence
Sometimes I See
My Ship
Always
Seven Days
I Can See Your Dreams

Acoustic Alchemy - Sounds of St Lucia (2003)

Innhold:
Trail Blazer
Playing for Time
Angel of South
The Beautiful Game
Viva Chè
Cool as a Rule
Red Dust and Spanish Lace
Flamoco Loco
The Wind of Change
Augustrasse 18
Panama Cat
Lazeez

Favoritter på denne platen må være "The wind of Change", "Playing for Time" og "Trail Blazer".

Så trenger du bakgrunnsmusikk for rolige kvelder så sjekk ut Acoustic Alchemy. Jeg tør å påstå at de er verdt det!

Focus - Hamburger Concerto (1974)

Etter å ha gitt ut kult albumet "In and out of Focus" fik Dresden og Kluyver sparken.

Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek, Why should the Fire Die (2000, 2005)

I 2005 gikk bandet sammen med Tony Berg og Eric Valentine for å lage platen "Why should The Fire Die".

"The hand Song"
"The House of Tom Bombadil"
"The lighthouse's Tale"
"Jealous of the Moon"
"Tomorrow is A Long Time"
"Out of The Woods"
"Sweet Afton"

The Band - The Last Waltz (1976)

Konserten starter forsiktig med "Theme From The Last Waltz" i skikkelig vals takt. Så følger "Up on Cripple Creek" og da er festen allerede skikkelig i gang. Mine favoritter på dette monsteret av en konsert må være;
"Up on Cripple Creek"
"Coyote"
"It Makes no Difference"
"The night They drove old Dixie down"
"The Shape im In"
"Forever Young"
"Helpless"

Her får du store musikkopplevelser i bøtter og spann.

This is rock and roll!

Innhold:
Above The Treetops
Facing West
Cathedral in a Suitcase
Finding and believing
The Longest Summer
Sunlight
Rain River
Always and Forever
See the world
As a flower Blossoms (I am running to You)
Antonia
The Truth will always be
Tell her you Saw me
Not to be forgotten

Alle kun plutselig like Motorpsycho.

Her finner du banjo og fraser som "Everything is great when you're dead, there are people around you and flowers in your bed" litt surealistisk men utrolig fint og søtt.

Jonathan Elias - American River (2004)

"At the Edge" starter hele denne fantastiske plata med lett, men tydelig pianospill.

Innhold:
At the Edge
The Continuance/Mariners and Musicians
Wild Colorado
Waiting in the Forest
Crossing Rivers
Southern Delta
The Source
American River
Ice on the St. Laurence
Towards Home
The Great Divide
Move
Mother of Exile
You cant Stop Love (wake up America)

Mine favorittlåter er "Move", "Crossing Rivers" og "The Continuance/Mariners and Musicians".

Led Zeppelin - Houses of The Holy (1973)

Innhold:
The Song Remains the Same
The Rain Song
Over the Hills And Far Away
The Crunge
Dancing Days
D'Yer Mak'er
No Quarter
The Ocean

Det hele starter med "Are you going with me?" og avsluttes med "San Lorenzo".

Innhold:
Are you going With me?
The Fields, The Sky
Goodbye
Phase Dance
Straight on Red
Farmer's Trust
Extradition
Going Ahead - As Falls Wichita, so falls Wichita Falls
Travels
Song for Bilbao
San Lorenzo
